Gippsland: 2025 seasonal burning operations
HVP Plantations is planning Fuel Reduction Burns of post-harvest residue in recently harvested forest sites on HVP’s estate across Gippsland. These operations are planned for April to July 2025. The timing of each burn is dependent on site and weather conditions that assist in achieving a safe and controlled burn. Harvest residues are placed into heaps and a mineral earth break is constructed around the boundary to reduce the risk of escape. Residents within the immediate area of proposed burns will receive neighbour notifications. Smoke may be evident for up to three days, following ignition.
HVP Plantations is a registered brigade with the CFA and maintains a fleet of firefighting resources and appropriately trained and skilled staff. All burns will be registered with the CFA and relevant authorities and neighbours will be notified prior to ignition of each area.
Mirboo North: storm recovery
The severe storm that impacted Mirboo North in February 2024 also caused significant damage to a nearby young plantation. Unfortunately, due to the age of the trees, salvage harvesting was not possible. The damaged trees have been heaped on site, and the area is scheduled for replanting once this remaining residue has been safely burned.
Burning will only proceed when conditions are suitable. The forecast for the weekend of Saturday 26 April suggests that wind conditions are likely to carry any smoke away from the Mirboo North township and nearby properties.
