Understanding koalas and how they interact with our forests and plantations helps inform our decisions, and to protect them more effectively. Beyond daily operations, we invest in broader conservation projects and research. In over twenty years of involvement, key initiatives have included:

  • Monitoring koala populations across the landscape
  • Supporting habitat mapping and local population genetic studies
  • Rehabilitating native vegetation to improve koala habitat
  • Contributing to university research
  • Supporting koala breeding programs through relocation and food supply
  • Contributing to the Victorian Koala Management Strategy.

Our learning continues

HVP is proud to be continuing our support for monitoring and research efforts. Current activities include:

  • Participation in the Great Victorian Koala Survey: led by scientists from the Arthur Rylah Institute, this survey combines ground transects with advanced acoustic monitoring and AI to assess koala populations across large areas of Victoria, including HVP land.
  • Partnership with university undergraduate and post-graduate studies on the conservation and management of koalas in South Gippsland.

Initiatives such as these become critical sources of information for koala conservation in Victoria, and we are committed to playing our part.

Koala genetic research

Investing in koala conservation

The South Gippsland koala population is particularly valued for its strong genetic diversity and health, making it a focus for long-term conservation efforts.

HVP contributed to a South Australian-based breeding program by relocating four healthy male koalas from South Gippsland – and providing feed trees grown at our nursery – to support the facility. This collaborative project involved government agencies, veterinarians, and conservation experts, and shows what can be achieved when people work together to protect native species.
