Gippsland Autumn Silvicultural Burning Program
April 21, 2026
HVP Gippsland is preparing to implement our annual post-harvest silvicultural burning program. These limited, carefully managed operations are conducted through the autumn period to capitalise on benign weather conditions.
Our silvicultural team will continue to make every effort to minimise the potential impact from this program on neighbours and our local communities through careful planning and by actively working to reduce the amount of post-harvest slash to be burnt.
Silvicultural burning operations only occur under suitable weather and wind conditions. While most material will be burnt relatively quickly, some residual smoke may remain visible for a time after the operation has been completed.
The program will commence from Wednesday 22 April in the Albert plantation near the upper catchment of Albert River.
Mirboo North: storm recovery
The severe storm that impacted Mirboo North in February 2024 also caused significant damage to a nearby young plantation. Unfortunately, due to the age of the trees, salvage harvesting was not possible. The damaged trees have been heaped on site, and the area is scheduled for replanting once this remaining residue has been safely burned. Burning will only proceed when conditions are suitable.
The forecast for this coming weekend suggests that wind conditions are likely to carry any smoke away from the Mirboo North township and nearby properties. Recent rain will have also assisted to create suitable conditions. As a result, we expect to complete this operation on Sunday 10 May.
